New Thru 30 - Day 1

I handed out the challenge yesterday to all who would join me in reading the New Testament in 30 days (see post).  Let me tell you day 1 was awesome and here is what stuck out to me the most.

Matthew 6:22-23
22
“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light.
23 But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

What we take into our hearts and lives have a huge affect on our spiritual disposition.  We have to always be on guard to what we are putting into our lives.  The statement at the end of verse 23 kicked me directly in the teeth.  “If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!“  What does it mean “the light within you is darkness?”  Can light be dark and still guide our path?  I don’t think so.  The powerful imagery here is that darkness is so powerful that will consume the light in our lives and we will become spiritually dead.  Keep the light bright.  Guard your heart, pray, fast, serve, love all.

Be the Light!

I am always amazed at  response I hear from people when they are asked to interact with non believers.  We act as if there is a BIG WHITE elephant in the room and we let the false sense of awkwardness overwhelm our ability to be the LIGHT.   “Be the Light”  is a simple command that is found in scripture.

Matthew 5:14-15:
14″You are the light of the world.   A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.

Our church has a regular outreach event call Tred Indiana.  I was so proud of our church today when 50 or so eager people departed, after an incredible pot luck dinner (yes we’re Southern Baptist), church to pass out literature inviting people to come to our service.  Even though some people might have been hesitant to participate in this outreach event today, they decided to “Be the Light!”  You see, God does not call us to be brighter, he does not command us to shine.  Rather, God calls us to “Be the Light.”

Next time that you have an opportunity to interact with people who need the life changing message of the Cross,  expose your light and the light of Christ that is within your heart will “Be the Jesus” that alters lives, saves marriages and gives real hope to people in your community.   And remember when you go with Gospel you go with the power of God!
